Are you confused about cleaning vs. dusting? Here are some guidelines that will help keep your furniture in top shape and make your investment last longer. Wood furniture: Use clean, dry, soft cloths or feather dusters to remove dust. Do not expose to direct sunlight or excessive temperatures. Extreme changes in humidity can cause warping. Do not use abrasives or harsh chemicals on wood furniture. To remove food stains, messy or sticky spots, dip the cloth in detergent dissolved in water, wring the cloth nearly dry and wipe the area. Rinse dry with a clean, soft, dry cloth. Upholstered furniture: Avoid direct sunlight exposure. Discoloration of fabric is a natural result of normal use. Cushions and pillows should be rotated on a weekly basis. Upholstered products should be vacuumed weekly. This will calm your allergies or asthma by reducing dust mites. Never use strong chemicals, protective agents or detergents. Spills must be attended to immediately. Metal Furniture: Dust with a dry or slightly damp cloth or use a vacuum cleaner brush. Do not use abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals. Do not expose to excessive humidity. If piece is soiled, wash with a damp cloth or sponge using mild detergent Wipe dry with cloth to avoid water spots. Mattresses: Vacuum mattress regularly. Flip or rotate your mattress four times a year so that it wears evenly. It should be turned side to side and also top to toe. Do not allow your mattress to get wet. Consider a mattress cover to protect the surface of your mattress. Do not use dry cleaning products on your mattress. This may cause damage to some of the material. If your mattress becomes wet or soiled, blot any excess moisture using a soft cloth. Clean any stains with a mild detergent and damp cloth. No jumping on the bed!
